The verdict: an open-air electric cart with a maximum of seven passengers, two hours, running by day or after dark, with hop-off stops that include the Lincoln Memorial. It is the small-group answer to the trolley and it has nearly as many reviews behind it. The carts are open and unheated, and the operator is unusually straight about which wheelchairs it can carry. No undercroft.
What the two hours cover
The cart meets at 450 F Street NW, at the side of the road next to Judiciary Square Metro, and the route begins near the Smithsonian buildings. It takes in the Jefferson, Lincoln and Washington memorials, the World War I and II memorials, and the Korean War Veterans and Vietnam Veterans memorials, passing the White House and the National Gallery of Art. The operator counts more than fifteen landmarks, with hop-off stops at the main ones, Lincoln among them.
Two practical notes from the listing that people find out the hard way. The carts are open-air and not heated, so layers matter for months either side of summer. And if a departure is full, your party may be split between carts, though the carts travel together and stop at the same places.
