Is the Lincoln Memorial worth visiting?
The case for the memorial itself is easy and I am not going to pad it out. It is one of the few famous buildings that does not disappoint at close range, the statue is 19 feet tall and reads differently from every distance, and two of the most consequential pieces of American oratory are carved on the walls in front of you. It is free, it never closes, and it is lit at night. If you are in Washington, the memorial is not a decision.
What is worth paying for
Three things, in the order most people find them useful.
- A guide, if you want the Mall explained rather than listed. The memorials sit in a line and mean very little in isolation, and the difference a good guide makes is largest here.
- Transport, if the distances are the problem. Both Metro stations are the better part of a mile away — see how to get there — and the cart, bike and trolley tours exist mostly to solve that.
- Somebody else’s admin, if you would rather not book the undercroft ticket yourself. That is genuinely all the cheapest product sells, and it says so.
What is not worth paying for
Entry, because there is none. Skip-the-line access to the memorial, because there is no line to skip. And any monuments tour bought in the belief that it includes the new museum: only 2 of the 18 tours in our catalogue include the undercroft, and the other 16 visit the memorial above and stop there. Note the review counts, because they are the honest part of that table. The two products that include the undercroft have four reviews and none, and the trolley has more than a thousand. That is a fact about the museum being weeks old, not a verdict on the operators. Treat the new ones as new.
