Monuments and Memorials Bike Tour: an honest review

The verdict: the highest average in the catalogue that is backed by a real sample, 4.8 across several hundred ratings. Three hours and about four flat miles around the Mall and the Tidal Basin, bike and helmet included, with stops long enough to walk into the memorials. There is a waiver to sign in an app before you arrive, and that is the step people miss. No undercroft.

What the three hours look like

The group meets at the Wharf and rides the Mall and the Potomac Tidal Basin, stopping at the Washington Monument, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial, with the Jefferson Memorial on the way round. The operator rates the route easy and puts it at roughly four miles on flat ground. Helmets are provided and are mandatory. Trailers and tag-alongs can be rented for children, and the listing states that the tour is not suitable for pregnant women.

You will not ride up to the statue. Bikes and scooters are not allowed inside the memorial, so they stay at the racks and the last stretch is done on foot, up the steps or by the elevator to the left of them.

Do this first

The waiver has to be done before you turn up, in the operator’s own app: create an account, find the reservation by number and date, add your contact details, sign, and add a card. It also earns priority check-in. Doing it at the counter on a phone with one bar of signal is how a 9 a.m. departure becomes a 9.20 departure.

Undercroft: not included

This tour does not include the undercroft museum, and nothing in its title says so. Sixteen of the eighteen tours we track are in the same position: they stop at the memorial, which is free and needs no ticket, while the museum underneath takes a separate timed ticket you book yourself. See how undercroft tickets work or what the museum is.

The evidence

More than 400 ratings at 4.8, the highest average here attached to a sample worth the name. The reviews name a different guide almost every time, which is the useful signal: the average is holding up across the roster rather than resting on one person.

“We thoroughly enjoyed this three hour ride, visiting the monuments. Our bikes were of a high standard. Our guide Greg was awesome, very knowledgeable and accomodating, we would highly recommend him as your guide.”

What works

  • The best average in the catalogue on a sample large enough to trust
  • Bike and helmet included, and the route is flat and rated easy
  • Three hours covers far more ground than a two-hour walk
  • Stops are long enough to leave the bike and go into the memorials
  • Child trailers and tag-alongs can be rented

Worth knowing

  • A waiver, an app account and a card have to be sorted before arrival
  • Weather can cancel it; the operator offers a credit or refund if it cannot reschedule you
  • The listing states it is not suitable for pregnant women
  • You still walk the last stretch — no bikes inside the memorial
  • No undercroft entry, and three hours leaves no room for it

Who should book this

Reasonably confident riders who want the Mall and the Tidal Basin in one go, and families with children old enough to ride or small enough for a trailer. It is the wrong choice in heavy rain, the wrong choice if you want the history delivered slowly, and the wrong choice if the undercroft is the point of the day.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is the Monuments and Memorials bike tour?

The operator rates it easy: about four miles of flat terrain over three hours, with stops. Helmets are provided and mandatory, and a waiver has to be signed in the operator’s app before you arrive.

Can you cycle up to the Lincoln Memorial?

No. Riding bikes or scooters inside the memorial is not allowed, so the group leaves the bikes at the racks and walks up the steps, or takes the elevator to the left of them.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The operator says tours may be cancelled if conditions make riding dangerous, and that if it cannot reschedule you it will issue a full credit or refund.
